How to convert M.Tech to PhD in IITs? and What are the Pros and Cons?

Congrats for thought!

Initially you may join as M.Tech student, but you can convert to PhD student later. There are special rules to every institution which are passed by the senate of that institution.
In general,

If you are 2 year M.Tech student, you can convert to PhD after completing your 1st year of M.Tech with CGPA 8 (may vary). Find a advisor in the field you like most and approach academic section of your institute for more details.

If you are 3 year M.Tech, you can convert to PhD after completing your 2nd year of M.Tech with CGPA 8 (may vary). Since you are 3 year M.Tech student means you are already working on a research topic with your advisor, discuss the possibilities of graduate positions with him and approach academic section of your institute for more details.

Pros:
1. You can get both the degrees within 5 years of duration, so you career growth will be faster compared to your peers.
2. If you already comfortable with institution and advisor, most of time you will end up with good thesis.

Cons:
1. You may feel, your fellow friends are earning more.
2. May be monotonous work after some days.
