How to get PhD admission in IITs without GATE?

There are two ways to enter into PhD program of IITs. One is after M.Tech/M.E and other is direct PhD after B.Tech/B.E.

For those who have M.Tech/M.E degree, GATE is not mandatory but it add advantage while shortlisting for written/interview. The important factor here is your academic achievements specially graduation and post-graduation. Once you got shortlisted for written exam it is pretty clear that selection process solely depends on your written marks and performance in interview.

For those who have only B.Tech/B.E degree, GATE is must and also excellence in academics. For shortlisting Good GATE score is very much important and some times it can be sole factor for shortlisting. Once shortlisted for written exam the process is pretty much similar to above case.

Unlike M.Tech admissions, IIT conduct PhD admission for every semester. The written exam syllabus pretty much similar to GATE but they focus on few subjects which are relevent for your research. For example,

Micro and VLSI:
They focus on 1. Digital Electronics, 2. Analog electronics, 3. EDC and 4. Engineering mathematics

Signal processing: (Speech, Image, Video processing etc)
1. Digital Signal Processing 2. Probabulity and stochostic process 3. Linear algebra 4. Signals and systems and 5. Engineering mathematics.

Communication systems:
1. Digital communications 2. Probabulity and stochostic process 3. Linear algebra 4. Basics of Information theory 5. Digital signal processing and 6. Engineering mathematics.

It is important to focus on subjects like which are relevant for PhD course which you applied..
