Preparing for GATE in early of your graduation days gives you multiple benefits. It helps to score better in your university examinations, as well as it gives conceptual clarity. Preparing GATE is nothing but being strong in your basic engineering subjects, it directly helps in your campus placement recruitment and in other arenas.
Coming to actual point, I would give you year wise strategy,
In 2nd year, focus on basic engineering mathematics, electronic devices, signals and systems, control systems and network theory. It builds strong foundation and covers important part of actual GATE syllabus. Keep watching previous year papers. Not just GATE, but also IES and other competitive exams like ISRO, BARC etc. It helps in what to study and always put you in right path of the preparation.
In 3rd year, your focus should move to advanced subjects like analog electronics, digital electronics, communication systems and electro magnetic theory. Since your are already comfortable with signals and system and engineering mathematics, it will be easy to cover communications systems.
Along with your regular preparation you should spend extra time for practicing previous year problems and giving special effort on difficult topics from various subjects.
The above plan should be completed by 1semester of your 3rd year. Entire 2nd semester, should be like revise---> practice--->revise --->practice...... till exam.
In 4th year,
This time it is straight forward, give reading to entire syllabus and focus on solving previous year question papers and test series papers. Since you have already done most of your preparation and know your strong and weak areas. Focus on weak areas turn them as strong areas. Try to improve accuracy and conceptual clarity.
Take the exam, focus on final year project. It helps in interviews and boost your confidence.
